The Gurungs – An Important Ethnic Group of Nepal

Gurung

Gurungs have made significant contribution as Gurkha army in the British and Indian armies. Gurungs, one of the prominent residents of mountainous region of Nepal , make a decent chunk of the Gurkha army. We cannot introduce Gurkhas without Gurungs. Yet, this group only represent 2% of Nepali population. It is amazing how this ethnic minority has helped to make Nepal even richer in her cultures.

Gurungs are also known as “Tamu”. They are the descendants of Tibeto-Burman group. Recent scholar Tek Bahadur Gurung made a DNA research that presented  fact showing Gurungs origins in Mongorlia, Tibet and Greater China. His research showed that ancestors of Gurung migrated and reached regions of Nepal more than two thousand years ago or  before beginning of AD.

This blog highlight is dedicated to celebrate our beloved fellow citizens of Nepal. Gur
